Suzi puts a dent in beauty queen image

Age is no barrier for environmental and ageist activist Suzi Dent who was crowned Mrs Earth Australia in Melbourne on Saturday night.

Ms Dent will head to Las Vegas in June to compete in the world titles of Ms and Mrs Earth Pageant, the first time an Australian has taken part

The 54-year-old Elanora local said being part of the pageant was very exciting and quite different to being behind the scenes as a hair and makeup artist for the film industry.

“I’m a tomboy, mate,” she said, adding she had never worn a (formal) gown before the final.  “I’m not a typical beauty queen.”

Ms Dent said she was passionate about encouraging people to donate new and used shoes to a charity program called Souls4Soles to reduce landfill waste.  The shoes go to people in the Third World.

“Fashion is the second biggest cause of landfill in the world,” she said.

Ms Dent also said she wanted to start a conversation about ageism and was “honoured” to represent Australia as a woman over 50.

Support Suzi’s cause and donate your unwanted shoes to Soles4Souls Australia by dropping them to these Bartercard offices around Australia
