The 2016 Bartercard Ball Bike Kid announced: 14 year old Lachie Messer from Southport State High,
Sea FM’s Charli Robinson, Bartercard General Manager Andrew Barker and ex Titan Luke O’Dwyer.

The search for the 2016 Bartercard Ball Bike Kid came to an end yesterday when the winner was selected from a shortlist of four fierce Titans fans.

Bartercard recently put a call out to Gold Coasters aged 10 to 14 years old to apply as the next Ball Bike Kid who’s become the token field-zipper since the Titans started playing in 2007.

Lachie Messer from Southport State High was selected by a panel of judges this year including Sea FM’s Charli Robinson, ex-Gold Coast Titan Luke O’Dwyer and Bartercard’s General Manager Andrew Barker.

Charli said the selection came down to someone who was confident enough to take on the big role.

“It was so inspiring to listen to the kids talk about their favourite players and Lachie was a real stand-out being so passionate about the sport at such a young age and couching Under 6s in rugby league,” she said.

“This really is a dream come true for him.”

The 14 year-old Southport State High student will be responsible for leading the Titans out to the field at every home game, riding the kicking tee out after each try, interviewing players and starring in videos throughout the season.

Also a player and a referee at the Parkwood Sharks Junior Rugby League since 2014, Lachie said his new job is everything he’s ever wanted.

“I’ve loved the Titans since I was seven years old and my favourite player is Agnatius Paasi,” he said.

“I’m excited for a big season on the Ball Bike.”

The other shortlisted applicants were 10 year old Brédon Diaz from Our Lady of Sacred Heart Darra, 13 year old Heath Slater from All Saints Anglican School and 10 year-old Ava Swain from Varsity College.

Bartercard General Manager Andrew Barker said that the company has been sponsoring the Gold Coast Titans since inception.

“Bartercard is a home-grown business and we want to support a home-grown team,” he said.

“At the heart of the club the Titans have always been community-focused and we want to continue supporting them well into the future.”

Lachie’s mum Sue Messer, who is the Fundraising Co-ordinator at the Parkwood Sharks Junior Rugby League, said she’s thrilled for her son.

“He has so much commitment to his League and his Under 6s, this new role is really the icing on the cake for him.”

The 2016 Bartercard Ball Bike Kid will make his debut at the Titans vs Tigers game this Saturday 19th March at Cbus Super Stadium, with the club pushing for a full house.

Twelve-year-old Liam Talbot from Coombabah State High School is Lachie’s predecessor and wrapped up a successful season as the 2015 Bartercard Ball Bike Kid.
