Here’s to Barter way to do business

A SPIKE in Bartercard membership among tourism operators in the Tweed and southern Gold Coast region has fuelled business from holiday makers.
 
Bartercard founder and South Gold Coast franchise principal Andrew Federowsky said: “The region has seen strong growth in 2015 as local businesses in all industries, but particularly those in the tourism, hospitality and leisure sectors, incorporate Bartercard into their growth strategies to help maximise profits.”
 
“Trading systems offer a creative way to improve cash flow and attract new customers, even during low-season periods, by tapping into an extended network of business owners who, in turn, generate increased word-of-mouth referrals for cash bookings.
 
“Our members are then able to use their additional income stream paid in trade dollars to offset expenses, including business essentials such as product, advertising and promotions, or use it to reward staff or for the luxuries small business owners go without, such as holidays or meals out.”
 
Berger Houseboat Holidays turned to Bartercard following the Global Financial Crisis. “It has enabled our business to branch out with major advertising campaigns and promotional events,” Sue- Ellen Berger said.
 
The firm has operated vessels cruising the Tweed River since 1994 and joined Bartercard in 2012. It has saved cash by using trade dollars to cover pest control, carpet cleaning, upholstery and fire safety equipment, as well as paying for staff training.
 
For Glenna Watkins, joining Bartercard when she launched Gold Coast Motorhome Hire two years ago allowed her to grow the business by using trade dollars to cover maintenance of her fleet.
 
“Since we started, our customers have been 50 per cent Barter, 50 per cent cash clients, and the business has expanded to a new yard with great visibility on the Gold Coast Highway at Coolangatta,” she said.
